I received a Popup Error Message

Error Message

Description

A file I/O error has occurred. Velosecure must terminate because most likely the process tried printing a non-printable character.

Velosecure read a character and attempted to write that character out to file. However the character was not printable, rather it was an ASCII character, such as beep.

File Access Error. Ensure you have Full Control of the Velosecure data directory and no files are open for writing in another program. Velosecure must terminate.

Velosecure could not write an output file to its subdirectory.

  • The data file might have already existed and been open in another application, such as Excel.
  • The currently logged in user might not have modify access to the Velosecure subdirectories.
  • There may be a command prompt open and focused on a Velosecure output directory.

License Expired: Your velosecure.key is too old. Velosecure will not continue.

Your license key file has expired and a new one must be obtained at www.velosecure.com.

I received an “Invalid Operation” error

If executing from the Console
You must supply “-f” or “-x operation” and that operation must be valid. For a list of valid operations please execute “Velosecure /?”
If executing from the GUI
You must select at least one operation must be on the main screen. Check one box at a minimum.

I received the message “Authorization Failed: Your license does not include this server”.

You must specify a machine name or IP address that is exactly the same as the one you generated a key for at www.velosecure.com. You may use the GUI or type “Velosecure –x keylist” to obtain a list of licensed machines. If you generated a key with a machine’s IP address, you must use its IP address at the command line, not its NetBIOS name and vice versa. Ensure NetBIOS names and IP addresses appear exactly the same as in the key. If white space or weird characters appear in your license key listing, it is likely that these characters were inputted into the text box on the website; this often occurs when a machine listing is cut-and-pasted from another source such as Excel.

I received the message “Error: 53: The network path was not found.”

You must be able to perform a “net use” to the target machine as an administrator. If you cannot, Velosecure cannot execute and will produce this error message. This problem may be caused by any of the following:

  • The target machine might be shutdown, unplugged, or otherwise unavailable
  • A hardware/software firewall or router could be blocking NetBIOS and/or RPC traffic
  • NetBIOS over TCP/IP could be disabled
  • The Server service could be disabled, paused, or not running on target
  • The target could be multi-homed and you may not be targeting the correct IP address
  • File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks could be disabled on target

I received the following message:

Error: 5: Access is denied.
Access was denied to this machine:
 1. Provide authentication credentials.
 2. If error persists, ensure the Workstation Service is running.
Note: Workstation Service is required to resolve NetBIOS names.
You must have administrative access to the target machine. If you do not, Velosecure cannot execute and will produce this error message. Authentication is only required to be in memory, so you may choose to perform a net use to the target with administrative credentials. You may also accomplish this within Velosecure by using the GUI or by supplying a –u and –p at the command prompt.

Active Directory Modules were skipped
Routing and Remote Access Modules were skipped.

For Active Directory functions or Routing and Remote Access Services, you must supply a username and password.

My client name is longer than 64 characters.

Velosecure is currently limited to handling 64 character client names, please abbreviate or truncate your selection to 64 characters.

The Internet Information Services (IIS) Module is not collecting data.

Due to limitations with the functionality of IIS, special procedures must be undertaken to utilize the IIS module properly. The following procedures are also detailed in the HTML help file included with every download of Velosecure.

You cannot administer IIS services unless you are a member of the domain and have administrator privileges. Therefore, when you use a remote machine to administer an IIS server, only the currently logged in credentials are passed. You have several options (in order of our preference) if running the Velosecure IIS intelligence module:

  • Create a temporary account on the host computer with the same username and password as that of the targets. 'SU' to that account.
  • Same as above, except log into the host computer, rather than 'SU'ing.
  • Add the host machine to the domain and log in with the domain credentials.
  • Add an account to the domain with the username and password from the host machine and add it to the Domain Admins group.

I am specifying a remote machine and Velosecure is only gathering local data

You are most likely using a trial key. Trial keys are for evaluation and only gather local information

Why doesn’t Velosecure collect password hashes or brute force attack my target.

Due to the sensitivity of this data customers have asked that this functionality be removed. There are no plans for Velosecure to implement password attacks.

I only have DNS names for my targets, what should I do?

Velosecure does not currently support the use of DNS names, instead, use the target's IP address. [NetBIOS names are also valid.]
