Using console to update endpoint licenses, AnyFind definitions, or software

Overview

This article describes the process for updating existing endpoints with new license files, AnyFind definitions, or client software versions.  These steps do not apply to initial deployment.  Endpoints must have already been deployed and be successfully communicating with the console for these updates to be applied.

This article contains the following sections:

Updating Licenses

To update the endpoint licenses via the console application, perform the following steps:

Note: This process is not compatible with Activation Numbers.  A valid license file, identityfinder.lic, must be available.

  1. Log in to the Console with a web browser.
  2. Navigate to the Settings > Client Updates page.
  3. Scroll to the section labeled "License Updates."
  4. Specify the location of the new license file (identityfinder.lic):
    1. URL: A specific URL that points to a location on a web server that all endpoints can access. This URL will be used by endpoints to download the specified file rather than having the file distributed by the console server itself. This option is useful if an existing distribution server is used for deploying applications or if many endpoints exist and the bandwidth/load of distributing files causes issues with the responsiveness of the console server.
    2. Local file: Use the "..." button to select a target file from the current workstation that will be uploaded to the console server. When this option is used the console server keeps the uploaded file and provides it to each endpoint as necessary.
  5. Specify the endpoints to which the new license should be applied (Updates can only be applied to tags, they cannot be applied to individual endpoints.)
    1. All Endpoints: Select this option to apply the update to all endpoints.  This option should be used when the new license file contains the appropriate license information for all target platforms.
    2. Specified tags: Select this option to apply the update only to specified tags.  This options should be used when only a subset of all existing endpoints require the update.
  6. Click "Apply".

The next time the endpoint service on the specified endpoint(s) poll, they will download and apply the license update.  It may be necessary to wait twice the polling interval to ensure that the update has been applied.

To cancel the update, click "Remove."  Endpoints that were updated before the update was removed will not revert back to their previous license.

Updating AnyFind Definitions

To update the AnyFind definitions on the endpoint(s) via the console application, perform the following steps:

Note: The latest definitions can be downloaded here:

The file to be uploaded can be the zip file available at the link above or just the definitions file (identitydb.dat) itself.

  1. Log in to the Console with a web browser.
  2. Navigate to the Settings > Client Updates page.
  3. Scroll to the section labeled "AnyFind Definitions Updates."
  4. Specify the location of the new AnyFind Definitions file:
  5. Specify the endpoints to which the new definitions should be applied (Updates can only be applied to tags, they cannot be applied to individual endpoints.)
    1. All Endpoints: Select this option to apply the update to all endpoints.
    2. Specified tags: Select this option to apply the update only to specified tags.
  6. Click "Apply".

The next time the endpoint service on the specified endpoint(s) poll, they will download and apply the AnyFind definitions update.  It may be necessary to wait twice the polling interval to ensure that the update has been applied.

To cancel the update, click "Remove."  Endpoints that were updated before the update was removed will not revert back to their previous definitions.

Updating Client Software

To update the client software on the endpoint(s) via the console application, perform the following steps:

Note: A valid MSI (Windows) or PKG (Mac OS) installation file must be created prior to performing these steps.  For details on creating installation packages, refer to the Additional Resources section of this article.
  1. Log in to the Console with a web browser.
  2. Navigate to the Settings > Client Updates page.
  3. Scroll to the section labeled "Windows Client Updates" or "Mac Client Updates", as appropriate.
  4. Specify the location of the new installation package file:
    1. URL: A specific URL that points to a location on a web server that all endpoints can access. This URL will be used by endpoints to download the specified file instead of having the file distributed by the console server itself.
  5. Specify the endpoints to which the new client software should be applied (Updates can only be applied to tags, they cannot be applied to individual endpoints.)
    1. All Endpoints: Select this option to apply the update to all endpoints.  This option should be used when the installation package is appropriate for all endpoints (for example, when all endpoints are either Windows or Mac OS).

To cancel the update, click "Remove."  Endpoints that were updated before the update was removed will not revert back to their previous version.
