Identity Finder Releases Analysis of Personal Data from AntiSec Attack on Law Enforcement
Data Breach Contains More than 2,500 SSNs, 15,000 Dates of Birth, 8,000 Passwords, and 45,000 Personal Addresses
New York, New York - August 8, 2011 Identity Finder, LLC (www.identityfinder.com) today released a detailed analysis of the 10GB confidential data cache of U.S. law enforcement agencies by hackers associated with the AntiSec movement. According to the AntiSec hackers, it includes "hundreds of private email spools, password information, address and social security numbers, credit card numbers, snitch information, training files, and more."
Identity Finder, LLC used their Data Leakage Prevention (DLP) software solution to verify the extent of the breach, and will provide a free copy of their report to law enforcement departments affected by this breach. The files appear to contain information regarding officers, informants, and law enforcement investigations.
Identity Finder DLP is a highly accurate software solution that automatically discovers files, emails, and databases containing unprotected sensitive personal information. Identity Finder helps reduce the risk of data breaches and prevents data loss by searching and securing confidential data such as Social Security Numbers, Credit Card Numbers, Patient Health Information, and other Personally Identifiable Information. Based upon Identity Finder's analysis, the files posted by AntiSec contain:
- 2,719 total Social Security Numbers (1,923 were unique)
- 15,798 total Dates of Birth, including duplicates
- 8,214 total Passwords, including duplicates
- 45,764 total Postal Addresses, including duplicates
- 8 Credit Card Numbers
- 53 Driver License Numbers
- 89,589 total Telephone Numbers, including duplicates
- 1.5 Million total E-Mail Addresses, including duplicates
The data dump also contained 334 files infected by one of 22 unique viruses that appear to be in the victims’ e-mail attachments. No evidence suggests they were injected by AntiSec.
Aaron Titus, chief privacy officer of Identity Finder, warned, "If you think you were affected by this data breach, you should at the minimum get a free credit report by visiting annualcreditreport.com, and consider freezing your credit."
